High Tea

Hi Everyone!

Welcome again to Courtney Psak’s 30 days to 30 blog. Based off of my book Thirty Days to Thirty, a fiction novel that is a fun light hearted or vacation/beach read about a girl accomplishing her bucket list before her 30th birthday.

Although it’s a chick lit, it’s also about self discovery and personal development that is meant to inspire people like me who are almost 30 and want to accomplish those bucket list items that they have been meaning to get to, but tend to let fall to the wayside.

This blog is about my bucket list items that I am accomplishing before I turn 30. I hope they inspire you to do the same!

I mention in my earlier post how I went to Northern Ireland. We were visiting a friend who lived there, so while Paul was on a business trip in London and not coming in until that night, Andrew and his girlfriend took me out around Belfast.

I was happily surprised when I found out they were going to take me to  high tea.

We went to a very nice hotel where they served us different types of tea, champagne, mini sandwiches and of course tons of sweet desserts.

High Tea is one of those unique experiences that you have to go at least once. It’s a fancy tradition that the UK still has and it’s fun to look around at the types of people who go. You will see a certain amount of tourists, some are girlfriends catching up, some are women who clearly have been doing this tradition for over forty years.

With the variety of teas and food offered, it’s also a great way to try new things. I discovered that I like Lapsang tea, which is a smoky Indian tea. For the fall/winter season this will be a great tea to drink in front of a fireplace.

For the most part, what I like best about high tea is the pace. It’s an afternoon tea that takes it’s time. There is a good pace in between each serving of sandwiches, teas and desserts. It allows you to relax and enjoy the company you are with.

It’s certainly a tradition I wouldn’t mind picking up with my girlfriends every once in awhile.

Thank you for reading this entry of Courtney Psak’s 30 days to 30 blog. I hope this inspires you with your own bucket list to accomplish as much as you can before your 30th or even before your next birthday!

Fly Fishing

I’ll admit, fly fishing wasn’t something on my bucket list, but it was on Paul’s. Paul used to love doing this as a kid and would even make his own flies.

It’s been years since he has done this, so when he asked if I’d be willing to do this on our trip to Northern Ireland, I said of course!

The morning was a bit of a rough start, since we had gone out with our friends in Belfast the night before. We had only gotten a few hours of sleep before we had to wake up, drive on the other side of the road, to Lisbon where we were meeting our fishing guide.

What I liked best about our guide was he was willing to teach me how to fly fish properly, without being too on top of me. Given the lack of sleep, I was in no mood to have this guy correcting me every time I castes and he got that.

What also helped was I was the first to get a fish. Paul was happy for me at first, but when I caught another one ten minutes later I think he started to get a bit peeved given the fact that I didn’t care whether or not I caught a fish at all, let alone two right away while he sat patiently trying to strategically  hook them.

Paul did wind up getting two fish as well, so we were even at the end.

The atmosphere was great. We fished in this  stream that had a cow farm on one side and a horse farm on the other underneath a stone bridge. We came in on the horse side and there was one horse in particular that wanted to be our friend. Then again, our camera bag  looked like feed and he kept trying to eat it.

What I learned from this experience was it’s important to always try new things. At first I wasn’t particularly excited about it, but after catching two fish I really started to enjoy it and I will definitely do this again!

Go to Ireland

So  I have been to Ireland before when I studied abroad. I had gone to Dublin and had taken a bus tour to the Cliffs of Moher stopping off in a bunch of small towns in between.

The one thing I have to say that still remains true is how friendly the people are. They are always so welcoming to everyone, which seems like a rarity these days.

For this trip, we got to visit our good friend Andrew who lives there.  Him and his girlfriend showed Paul and I around town Friday night before we made our way out to Bushmills on Saturday while they went to a wedding. We then met them back in Belfast Sunday night before heading out Monday morning.

It was a short trip, but we had packed so much stuff in it felt like a week. I had mentioned how going out with locals is always your best best, but I have to say even the day Paul and I took out to Bushmills was great as well.

We went and did a tour of the whiskey distillery, then we walked back to the hotel and enjoyed a nice dinner with a night cap of live Irish folk music in the pub. Not once did we feel like tourist or outsiders.

The pub at the Bushmills seemed to be the place everyone in town went to, so you didn’t feel like you were in a tourist trap. Even when we went to the distillery we wound up having a tasting with someone from Omagh, who went to school with our friend Andrew.

The following day we did the rope bridge, Giant’s Causeway and Port Rush so we really felt like we got a see a variety of Northern Ireland.

What I took away from the trip is that friendly people really made the trip for us. There have been times even when we went to Paris with friends, we were turned off by how rude the local people can be. We New Yorkers are guilty of it as well because we don’t have the time or patience.

Realizing just how much it made a difference for us, I am going to make sure, moving forward, that I am more conscious with how I am when I’m working in Times Square. I get stopped a lot by tourists looking for directions and usually I’m running late to a meeting. But even in my delivery, just taking the thirty seconds that I know I have to talk a little slower and be a little more patient could make a difference on their experience here.

So from now I’m going to be more conscious of that.

Go See a Pyschic

Hi Everyone!

This was kind of a bucket list item. I’ve done it a few times over the years. Once on the boardwalk down the shore and the other was when a  friend threw a psychic party.

I’ve never really been into psychic’s before. I generally feel like you can say anything general and someone will find a way to connect that to their situation.

When my friend threw a psychic party, the woman told me she saw me moving out west. When I told Paul, he agreed we moved west of the Hudson, but that was as far as we were going to go.

I was surprised by what she told people though. I had one friend come down crying because the psychic said that she and her husband would be the on the verge of financial ruin and divorce in the next six months. Thankfully that never happened, but her husband wasn’t happy to have my friend telling him they needed to cancel their trip to Italy.

There was one time that I was truly freaked out. I was in eighth grade on the boardwalk down at the Jersey shore with a friend of mine who wanted to check it out. I didn’t want to, but she said it was five bucks and wanted to go.

So I agreed. I waited in this small area for her to be done and then it was my turn. The woman no sooner took my palm to read it, when a crazed man came in yelling that we were all going to go to hell. This woman gets up to get security and leaves me there with this man yelling at me. I was completely shook to my core. When the psychic came back after security had taken the guy away, she offered to read me for free.

She told me a lot of things, some I didn’t want to hear, like I would die at age 83. No one wants to know when they are going to die.

But then she took a piece of paper and wrote down all the men that I was going to have relationships with. I was upset because there were only like four initials, but I became skeptical when the initials were AM, MR, PM, PP. I felt like these were totally made up.

I took the piece of paper and put it on my cork board in my room and never thought about it again. On my way to college I was cleaning out my room to pack up and I found that sheet of paper underneath my report card.

I literally turned white as I looked back on all of my past boyfriends. Not only did I date guys with those initials, but they were in order! Currently, I was in the early stages of dating my now husband Paul Psak, but I had a scary feeling that if we broke up I was going to end up a crazy cat lady (even though I don’t like cat).

Luckily it worked out with us and we got married, but I still never forgot that tingling feeling I got when I looked back at those initials.

So as far as what I’ve learned from this experience, I’m not really sure. I’m still a skeptic at heart and chalk that incident to be a crazy coincidence, but it does have me question the fact that maybe we all don’t know everything.

Anyway, looks like I can go skydiving worry free since I’m not dying until I’m 83 🙂

Living near friends

When I was living in New York City, for while I was the only one of my friends. They all still came in constantly to see me, so I didn’t exactly feel isolated.

We had a few people move into the city for a year here or there, but most of my friends were in Hoboken, right on the other side of the Hudson.

When Paul and I finally moved out of the city, I was a little heartbroken, but times change and it was the right decision to make. Between our friends and family being in New Jersey, we spent more time sitting in traffic to get off the island than we actually spent on the island.

When we moved to Hoboken, I was moving in across the street from my brother, a block over from two of our closest friends since high school, below a friend I had known since middle school and neighbors with a guy I went to preschool with. All of us remaining close for over ten years now.

So it literally became like the show Friends where everyone was just popping in on each other. Not to mention I had a balcony, so in the springtime we’d sit out there and would easily run into three or four people we knew walking to the grocery store or the restaurant/bar below us.

Needless to say, there is always something to do. If Paul is traveling for work, I can call up twelve people within a block of me to see who wants to grab dinner.

It’s an experience I never really thought about having before. I like my time alone so living so close to everyone I thought would be a bit suffocating. It turns out it’s really actually pretty amazing. We all have WhatsApp so when anyone wants to go grab a drink they can reach out to everyone on it to see whose in. If you don’t feel like going, you don’t have to. Everyone has obligations/work and can’t go out every night of the week so there is no pressure.

I’ve mentioned in earlier posts about being a “yes man” so as you can see I usually don’t miss out on too many of these.

What I learned from this experience is I know I will look back on this period in our lives and think about how great it really was to have that luxury of your best friends so close to you.

Foo Fighters

Yesterday I talked about ultimate fandom, so I guess you can say that my ultimate fanaticism lies with Dave Grohl.

To me, seeing Foo Fighters in concert is like saying you saw the Beatles or Elvis Presley. The Foo Fighters have shaped Rock n’ Roll and they are one of the few that still knows what it means to be a garage band.

What makes them so great, aside from great talent, is their attitude about everything. They always remain humble and most importantly, they know they wouldn’t be where they were without the fans.

A few years back, Brant Webb and Todd Russell were trapped in the Beaconsfield Mine for 14 days while they waited for rescue workers to come get them. When they got out they said they listened to the Foo Fighters on Webb’s iPod to lift their spirits and drown out the drilling.

Dave Grohl was moved to tears and offered them two tickets to any show, anywhere with cold beers waiting for them. He not only was good on his word, but he wrote a song to pay tribute to them.

Article here:

http://www.news.com.au/entertainment/music/foo-fighters-tribute-to-miners/story-e6frfn09-1111113930335

This past July, I was going  to go see them for the first time and I remember being worried it would be cancelled because we had all heard Dave Grohl broke his leg.

They continued to tour and when we went there, he told everyone the full details of the issue. He had fallen, very stupidly, and had broken his leg. He had the rest of the band do some covers while he was examined by the on sight doctor. He told him he had to go to a hospital because his foot was dislocated. Dave, while biting on his leather jacket, told him to set it back into place. After that, he told the doctor he was going back out. The doctor responded by telling him the only reason his foot was in place at the moment was because he was holding it in. To which Dave responded, then I guess you are coming out with me.

If you didn’t believe him he shows pictures of doctor Sven, holding his damn leg while he continued to perform. His attitude was people came out to see him and he wasn’t going to let them down.

When his manager told him to cancel the tour while he was in the hospital after several surgeries, he drew out a chair and asked if the stage crew could build him a chair he could sit in so he could continue with the tour.

You see so many bands cancel performances for stupid reasons (I’m talking to you Kings of Leon). Kings of Leon canceled a performance because a bird pooped on them.

Obviously Dave Grohl is the extreme, but it shows he has his priorities straight, which makes him not only a great performer but a great person as well and an ideal role model for everyone.

So what I learned from that concert is that no matter what happens, be sure to always focus on what’s important.

Not saying I’m on the verge of becoming a best seller, but when I think about writing, I write for myself because it makes me happy. Much like Dave Grohl writes music because it makes him happy. What’s important to keep in mind is where you are and how you got there. Right now what little exposure I do have, is because other indie authors and bloggers are willing to help by offering to review my book for me, interview and offer guest posts.

So I would like to do the same. If anyone is interested in a guest post where they want to talk about their bucket list items and what they learned from them, please feel free to reach out to me and I would be happy to have you.

Comicon

Comicon was never really something on my bucket list initially. I’ll admit, I’ve never been into fantasy, superhero type stuff. Anything I’ve ever seen has been under the influence of my husband and he’s not even all that into it.

So why did I put this on my bucket list? Well, I work for Nickelodeon. We are the ones that handle Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Avatar and Legend of Korra. Needless to say our company gets tickets to go to the New York Comicon every year to work or visit our booth.

So for the five years I have been at Nickelodeon, I would watch as coworkers would take a few hours out of the day and go visit Comicon.

At the time, I was usually swamped with work, but last year I finally decided to check it out. If I was ever going to go, working at Nickelodeon would be the time.

So with a bunch of coworkers, we waited on line for an hour and half (yes no special privilege here). I was completely amazed by how many people showed up and how many came full dressed up in their favorite characters. The amount of money that people must have spent on their costumes were amazing. You would be shamed if you had gone to Party City. Thankfully my coworkers were able to explain to me what characters were from what shows, but I felt like I had entered another dimension I had never experienced before. There were people of all walks of life from little children to fifty-year-old men all here for the same reason.

When we got inside, I was completely overwhelmed. I couldn’t believe how big the place was and just how much was going on. A lot of people remained  in full character the whole time they were there and were willing to take pictures with everyone.

I found it amazing to have a place like this that was a judgement free zone, where everyone with the same passions all can come together.

Seeing people  have a real interest in something and the ability to get together with everyone and geek out about it, I’ll admit made me jealous.

I’m not sure I have anything that I am that passionate about, at least that I could celebrate in the manner that these people do every year. I really had developed a new found respect for them, like I was peeking behind the curtain on the inner workings of ultimate fandom.

So I guess what I have learned from this experience are two things.

As an employee of Nickelodeon who creates consumer products, it was amazing to see what you work on really being put to use and seeing the affect it has on people. It never really registered for me before I went there and saw it for myself.

The other thing this experience taught me was to find my own passions. I realize that I get really passionate about reading. I love getting into a good book and not being able to go to sleep until I finish it, yet ultimately disappointed at the end when it’s over. So I joined a book club where I can geek out with people on some of my favorite stories and we can gush about the characters we love and love to hate.

Eastern State Penn

I’m a huge fan of horror. Actually I’m very specific. I don’t like gore or torture scenes, but I love a good thriller. I love that tingly feeling you get when you are anticipating something is going to happen. The creepy music is going and it takes everything for you to yell “don’t go in there!”

One thing that was always on my bucket list this time of year was a haunted trail, house or something we could go to. The ultimate though, was going to the Eastern State Penitentiary.

This place is phenomenal. We got a huge group of people to go and started out with dinner across the street which was also themed for Halloween.

You make a reservation in advance and then you enter the line that is stamped for your time frame.

Before we even got in, I was terrified. Downtown Philadelphia isn’t exactly the safest place and across the street there was a man that seemed a little tweaked. I didn’t mean to, but when I was waiting on line I wound up catching  eyes with him. Sensing my uneasiness I guess, he pointed at me and then ran at me full speed. I started screaming thinking I was about to get killed by a crack addict or something. Then he stopped a breath in front of me and I noticed that he had a star contact in his eye and gore makeup. I was relieved to know he was a part of the whole scene.

My friends still make fun of me because that was the first time I was ever legitimately  terrified.

What’s great about doing stuff like this is you get to see people at their most vulnerable. My husband hates doing these with me because when it comes to flight or fight, he will fight and he’s always afraid he’s going to hit one of the actors.

My brother-in-law was the best though. He’s a 6’5 broad man who no one in their right mind would want to mess with. Yet, going through this penitentiary he was pushing my 5’ft girlfriend in front of the pack telling her that she had this.

I’m not going to lie, most haunted trails are cheesy, but this was unbelievable. At one point we walked through the cell block and there were men in orange jump suits standing in front of the cells with black bags over their heads with their hands all chained together. Meanwhile, there is smoke and strobe lights making it hard to see. Now you have to walk down this cell block while these men are shaking uncontrollably  and you are waiting for one of them to jump at you at any minute.

What I learned from this experience is that unfortunately, you can’t go two years in a row. Once you know the hiding spots, it will lose it’s luster. I went about five years ago, so I’m hoping I can go back soon and get as scared as I did the last time.

Even the people that don’t like being scared that came, enjoyed the experience.

So my suggestion for a bucket list item. Make sure you scare the hell out of yourself every once in awhile.

You’ll learn a lot about yourself based on the reaction you have.

Pranks

So I’m not encouraging anything serious, but pranks are a lot of fun. They make for good memories and everyone usually gets victimized at one time or another.

When I hear about the stories my husband shares of all the pranks they used to play on one another, I regret the fact that my friends and I didn’t do more of them.

Our scale of pranking was also wildly different. My friends and I used to put ketchup in the bottle of our friend’s Snapple can and wait to see how much of it she would  drink before she noticed it.

My husband on the other hand, used to play OPUS (other people’s useless sh*t). With Opus, everyone splits up into cars and has an hour to find the most ridiculous useless item they can.

Whoever can’t make it out that night gets all of the useless items dumped on their front lawn.

Obviously the reason for the prank is to get a rise out of the victim, so his friends and him look forward to hearing about the reaction of the parents  when they noticed a plethora of garden gnomes on their lawn.

I even remember one Halloween, my mom was actually mad that we didn’t get teepeed and decided to do it herself, just to see our reactions the next morning.

So probably the most recent prank I was a victim of was my friend last year had an Octoberfest party. I told her we should all wear lederhosen. She agreed and told me that she was going to tell all her guests to and she would as well.

My friend Danielle and I showed up and sure enough, no one else was in Lederhosen. A little peeved at first, we owned it and wound up also owning the beer pong table. In the end, I still think we were the winners of that party.

So one thing to remember when you prank or you are getting pranked.

Everyone just needs to learn to laugh at themselves. We all will be the butt of a joke at some point in time, just remember it’s all out of love.

Really it builds character because there are going to be times where you are going to embarrass yourself and you’ll be a better person if you can just own up to it and not let it ruin your day.

Plus the possibilities are endless when it comes to getting them back.

Thank you for reading this entry of Courtney Psak’s 30 days to 30 blog. I hope this inspires you with your own bucket list to accomplish as much as you can before your 30th or even before your next birthday!
